This condition is as with humans there are many factors causing them, from hereditary, genetic, age head trauma etc etc. Cataracts are identified by a cloudy discoloration over the retina of the eye and are usually quite easy to see to the naked eye.
Causes
There are many causes, the main ones being, hereditary, development of diabetes mellitus, old age or severe head trauma, but usually they are hereditary, therefore any dogs being considered for breeding, must first be eye tested.
Treatment
Usually your dog’s ophthalmologist will fully assess and properly advise on your individual dog’s case but basically they usually suggest an operation to remove the lens, however not all cases are operable. Apparently there is no non surgical treatment for cataracts, but one of the links below refutes this.
